Not all the 4694-104 hardware was used in the "Ruins in ASCII" project | | The model found in a dumpster featured a functional till and thermal | | printer, neither of which were necessary. | | | | 3.) Some of the found hardware was replaced | | The original 40-Character Vacuum Fluorescent Display II worked very well | | but the author was forced to replace it with an Emax Universal 104 when | | IBM's broke in transit. In the author's opinion the IBM product is far more | | durable than the Emax product and would likely have survived the move if | | the author hadn't removed the bare glass and printed-circuit VFD unit from | | the protective cage. Don't try this at home. As the specifications reveal | | below there are also many hardware inadequacies for the task the author had | | at hand, so as a consequence many parts (HDD, RAM, etc.) were upgraded | | accordingly. Despite it's heraldic charm the 4694-104 is pretty old | | in dog years. | | | | 4.) The formatting was changed in this document | | Bulleted lists have been ASCII-ized and the entire document modified to | | display on an 80x25 character terminal. Some extraneous spacing, carriage | | returns and line feeds have been tweaked. And lastly, non-printable | | characters such as the copyright symbol have been replaced with their ASCII | | equivalent. | | | | 5.) Don't trust this document at all | | If one were to use this document as a service manual, one would be insane. | | Firstly, it's a sales manual. Second, it isn't authoritative. Get the real | | one from IBM. | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Model Abstract 4694-104 (For IBM US, No Longer Available as of April 6, 2001) The IBM 4694 model 104 can be used as a controller/terminal, a terminal in a LAN or as a standalone terminal. The 104 is a 32 bit architecture terminal with a 5X86C 100MHz processor, 4 MB base memory, SVGA video with 1 Megabyte of video memory, a 1.44Megabyte floppy drive, two RS-232 ports, a PC keyboard & mouse port, four RS-485 Point of Sale I/O ports, two cash drawer ports, 2 full length ISA feature card slots and Ethernet 10BaseT standard on every terminal. The 104 has the capability to expand to 128 Megabytes of memory with four 72 pin, 60nS, fast page memory SIMM sockets that can contain any combination of 4, 8, 16 or 32MB SIMMs. The model 104 is a narrow footprint model and has the option for one 3.2GB or higher, 3.5 inch IDE Hard Disk Drive, a Token Ring or Store Loop adapter, the rear access Dump Switch and the Advanced Power Management feature. This model is suited to the customer with space constraints or the need for a smaller mechanical package for a distributed configuration, who is running 4690 OS or DOS.
